BEAM-SPARK IGNITION UNIT Mark 3. SIX VOLT POSITIVE EARTH.
Twelve volt Beamspark Unit.
The twelve volt negative earth Beamspark unit. Shown below is the connection diagram for this model. The twelve volt unit is only available in diecast enclosure, comes with two years warranty as standard.
The Beam-Spark ignition unit is proving very popular in the SIX VOLT POSITIVE EARTH configuration. The TWELVE VOLT NEGATIVE EARTH model I have re introduced as demand increased. Same two year warranty and same price post free in the UK. How they work is very simple but they do work well. It brings contact breaker / condensor ignition systems out of the dark ages and into the present century. Forget about dwell angles, that is yesterday's obsolete technology. The system has four wires, red, black, white and blue.
The red wire goes to positive. The black wire goes to the negative. The white wire ( trigger ) goes to the distributor contact breaker. The blue wire ( high voltage ) goes to the ignition coil. ( Put another way, if the wire from the distributor to the coil is removed and the white and blue wires are substituted that is the total change ).
The points ( CB ) have only a tiny fraction of current passing through them so they never wear or burn, the points are now an accurate switch to turn on the ignition unit which provides a very short high voltage pulse to the ignition coil and therefore to the spark plugs. This voltage pulse is well in excess of the voltage available from direct points to coil systems. This makes for easier starting and cold weather performance. If people say they get better miles per gallon well that can only be another plus for the Beam-Spark ignition unit.
Having said that it is essential the condensor is disconnected out of circuit. It can be left in place of course. The points gap can be set at six thousands and a minute touch of graphite grease on the cam lobe will ensure the points and the engine timing stays spot on tune for twenty thousand miles or more.
The Beam-Spark unit can be used with the original distributor , that is with the rotor arm and distributor cap.
For peak efficiency the distributor cap and rotor arm can be dispensed with and a twin output six volt coil can be substituted. This is known as ' redundant spark ignition' ( used on BMW flat twins ). The Beam-Spark will fire an ignition coil with a battery voltage as low as five volts.
***The Beamspark six volt positive earth version can be used on any vehicle that has six volt positive earth ignition such as pre and postwar cars.***
The feedback I have had regarding the six volt unit has been very pleasing. It has proved to be very reliable.
The main feedback I have had from users having fitted the Beam-Spark to several makes of British bikes was the ease of starting. In fact one chap with a 350 Bullet of 1962 vintage had all but given up until he fitted a Beam-Spark. What I actually find with the Sunbeam is it can be started by hand if the bike is in good fettle.
Carburation, ignition timing, good compression if correctly maintained make for good first time starting, hot or cold.
The unit is very light and can be attached to any flat surface with a double sided adhesive pad or secured with a tie-wrap.
I have extended the warranty to two years as the units are proving very reliable in the field. Anyone who has purchased a Beam-Spark will also have their warranty extended by another year
Postage costs are very reasonable to the Antipodes at £ 10 .
Europe has similar postage rates of £ 10
